Stoughton Comparison to other MSBA Projects

Rachel Lazerus

At the 11/18 Town Meeting, a chart was presented with the intent of making Stoughton's project look overly expensive compared to other towns who have built new schools with the MSBA. However, that chart used cherry-picked data which did not tell the full story.

The other towns used in the comparison have much higher poverty rates than Stoughton, are building elementary schools that are much smaller than Stoughton’s, and are building at different times than Stoughton, so material costs are very different. All of these are reasons why the projects can’t be directly compared. Even so, there are some other factors, like cost/child, that are stable across all projects and can be compared to the other towns selected.

The chart above is a more accurate and comparable representation of how Stoughton's project stacks up against others and which are the relevant factors specific to Stoughton.
